Flooding along the banks of the River Lena is an annual event with the spring melt waters adding extra volume to the river channel. Many people were affected by large-scale flooding along the course of the River Lena in 2001. Homes and businesses were destroyed by the flood waters in the town of Lensk, while Kirensk, Yakutsk and numerous villages were totally drenched. Happily, much of Lensk has been rebuilt since then.
